RIFLE. Cal. 7x57mm. S# 388. Bbl. 22 1/4". Utilizing remaining on hand M93 Spanish Mauser rifle actions, DWM built several hundred (exact number unknown) sporting rifles to include with military rifle shipments to African and South American countries, as was common practice during the early 20th century. Deemed "Pelizer" (Pleasure) rifles, these were often included as a "gifts" for the foreign decision making officers, which has led to them frequently being coined as "bribe" guns. This example is marked with a crown, followed by a Crown/N commercial nitro proof (crown proofs repeated on underside of bbl. and on top of bolt root), "257", and "G.B.P./ St.m.G" on the left side of the chamber, with a partially visible "M", followed by the S# "388" marked on the right side. Left receiver wall is marked "DEUTCH WAFFEN-UND/ MUNITIONSFABRIKEN, BERLIN". Toeline of stock is marked "388 MADE IN GERMANY". Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the interior of the receiver, which is polished in-the-white. 1-piece checkered wood pistol grip stock features a schnabel tip forend, a wrap around checkered panel at the forearm, checkered panels on either side of the wrist, 2 added black synthetic spacers, as well as an added red rubber recoil pad. Toeline of stock features an inletted sling swivel, with an integral sling swivel present on the underside of the bbl. 1-piece trigger guard featuring a hinged floorplate (appearing to utilized from remaining Model 1909 Argentine contract rifles), with adj. double set triggers. Dovetailed natural white beaded blade front sight on banded sight base, with a dovetail blank in the rear sight slot. Bolt stop housing is fitted with a Lyman No. 35 adj. aperture rear sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the receiver, bbl., trigger guard (on left side below wood line), bolt assembly, as well as the stock. LOP: 13 3/4". CONDITION: very good, with metal components retaining the vast majority of their original factory blue finish overall, exhibiting spots/areas of light to mild wear and thinning, some superficial handling marks, as well as a couple of scattered spots of light to mild surface oxidation that is present on the receiver bridge. Trigger guard and floorplate exhibit areas of thinning and wear that are fading to gray and brown patinas, with the floorplate also exhibiting consistent light pitting overall. Bright bore, exhibiting light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics, to include the double set triggers. Stock shows scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains very good overall. A very attractive example of a relatively unknown DWM Mauser rifle variation with a unique history. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6723/MLW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
